The Reflection of the Cold War in British Fiction
MYKYTYN, Kristýna
The thesis aims to reflect on the Cold War from the point of view of the United Kingdom and the United states of America, paying attention to events that led to the creation of the two analysed novels by contemporary British authors (Ian McEwan, Ken Follett). The sociocultural and political settings at the beginning of the Cold War are outlined as well as the time frame in which the novels take place, and the events depicted in both novels are examined objectively. The thesis presents the results of the interpretation and analysis of Ian McEwan's The Innocent (1990) and Ken Follett's Code to Zero (2000) with a focus on comparing objective historical observations with the novel storylines in the context of British espionage novels revolving around the Space Race in the USA and British operations in Berlin at the start of the Cold War.
Two-faced Garden: Different approaches to The Cement Garden
Nováková, Lucie ; Kupcová, Helena (advisor) ; Sládek, Miloš (referee)
The aim of my bachelor thesis is to analyze the first work of a contemporary British author Ian McEwan, The Cement Garden and to present its wide influence on art. To achieve my intention, I have focused on analyzing the play performed by Švandovo divadlo. The analysis is based on crucial events, such as the death of the father, the perish of the mother and her burial and final incestuous scene. Each moment has been closely examined so that one may understand the process of adaptation. The explanation of an adaptation process has been provided to support my claims. An opening chapter delves on the life and work of Ian McEwan, mentioning The Cement Garden which historical context is provided and on the remark regarding an evolutional process of literary work which is concerned with child protagonists. Author's inspirations and motives are also mentioned. Second chapter not only closely analyzes the novel and the crucial events, but also focuses on formal requirements, such as the narrator or the setting. Meanwhile the next chapter considers the theater adaptation and its accomplishments and downfalls. Brief explanation of possible adjustments is provided as is the difference between the prosaic text and the script. Final part is dedicated to the movie adaptation by Andrew Birkin. Unlike the previous...

KRHUTOVÁ, Karolína
The diploma thesis "From Child In Time to Atonement: The importance of crisis in Ian McEwan's works" aims to identify and subsequently analyse the issue of crisis in the selected works of Ian McEwan. The thesis focuses on six novels: The Child In Time, The Innocent, Black Dogs, Enduring Love, Amsterdam and Atonement. In the theoretical part, Ian McEwan is introduced in the context of British literature. Since Ian McEwan's work is on occasion influenced by postmodern thinking, the concept of postmodernism is characterized in brief. As Ian McEwan's later fiction is influenced immensely by his literary beginnings, his early fiction is introduced in order to provide a holistic view, a more complete picture. The following practical part examines the concept of crisis in Ian McEwan's work, using the author's selected works as references.

In the chosen novels, the thesis will notice the changes of McEwan´s work towards the globalization of space. The core of interpretational analyses will be the novels The Cement Garden, The Comfort of Strangers, Amsterdam, Saturday, Solar and Sweet Tooth. The comparison with Golding´s Lord of the Flies will be a part of the chapter concerning McEwan´s first novel, The Cement Garden.
